The provincial government of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Friday constituted an ‘empowered’ Anti Terrorists Force to act swiftly against growing violence that left more than 11 people dead and many wounded for the past one week, official said. About 70 personal of Rangers and Elite Force will form the task force that has been delegated ‘powers’ to take swift action where and when required, said Asad Zaamin, the deputy commissioner Gilgit. Last week, the GB police and administration came under fierce criticism from media and other quarters after series of sectarian motivated attacks and counter attacks, unleashed by terrorists, left more than 11 people of rival sects dead in the city while the security forces acted as spectators in most of the cases for they lacked powers to use force against them. After long deliberations ever-since sectarian related killings resumed in Gilgit, the provincial government in Gilgit Friday reached the conclusion that a joint task force with full powers could be the only real solution to the violence that erupted after a blast in a bookshop and was gaining momentum with each passing day. At least six people were killed in an ambush the day Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was in the town, unveiling series of development project for the region. The Deputy Commissioners said that the powerful joint task forces would restore peace in the Gilgit, the capital of newly upgraded GB where sectarian motivated skirmishes have rocked the routine life ahead of general polls scheduled to be held on November 12, forcing people to restrict their activities and stay home. The establishment of the Anti Terrorists Force was made public through an announcement via loudspeakers. Meanwhile a man was injured in a shooting incident near bus terminal while police said investigations were on to determine as to who killed the man whose dead body stuffed in a bag was recovered the other day from a street in khomer area.
